Project Information
The US Navy contracted 381 Constructors to enlarge and reconfigure a dry dock for submarines at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine. This seven year project includes a two-bay addition to Dry Dock 1, as well as other improvements.

The Challenge
Modernize and enlarge an aging dry dock originally designed for Los Angeles-class submarines, ensuring it remains capable of servicing newer submarine classes well into the future.
For Contractors
To date the largest O-Pile® DTH system was installed on this project in 2023. The O-Pile® 187-1131 DTH for swift, on-schedule installation.
The ability to deliver O-Pile® 100% manufactured in the USA ensured compliance with Navy requirements and reduced supply chain risks.
For Engineers
The reconfiguration of Dry Dock 1 required a system that could handle the structural demands of servicing larger and more advanced submarines. O-Pile® 187-1131 provided the necessary load-bearing capacity and long-term durability.

According to Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), who championed project funding, this expansion is crucial for national security. Upgrades to Dry Dock 1 ensure the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard can effectively maintain the submarine fleet for decades to come.
