East Side Coastal Resiliency Project

Project Information

The ESCR Project is a coastal protection initiative that aims to reduce flood risk due to coastal storms and sea level rise on Manhattan's East Side. Manhattan’s East Side waterfront is being rebuilt to protect parks and communities across 2.4 miles, from East 25th Street to Montgomery Street. Hundreds of O-Pile® of various sizes have been used, most of which were installed via impact and vibration hammers. Many OZ systems were used as well, with extra-long WOF-XL connectors between 42" X70 king piles, using PZC as the intermediate sheet pile. Typical length of these systems was over 80', while the intermediate sheets were about 75% of the king pile length. Over the first few years of this project, multiple spacing issues have been identified and solved, requiring the supply of special systems and connecting elements. When work begins on a project of this scale, unforeseen situations often arise that demand innovative and creative solutions.

The Challenge

Troubleshoot and solve ongoing spacing issues, and supply special systems and connecting elements to ensure the project’s effectiveness.

For Contractors

The use of O-Pile® in different sizes offers the flexibility needed to address varying soil conditions along 2.4 miles of coastline. Impact and vibration hammers have proven effective for most of these installations. Thanks to the availability of extra-long WOF-XL connectors and 42" X70 king pile systems, contractors have been able to accommodate design changes quickly.

For Engineers

Engineers benefit from the versatility of the OZ systems and the combination of O-Pile® with PZC intermediate sheets, ensuring robust lateral load capacity. The typical 80'+ piles (with intermediate sheets at 75% length) provide the necessary stiffness to withstand storm surges and sea-level rise along Manhattan’s East Side waterfront.

For Owners

By partnering closely with the client and stakeholders, the project team can identify the most cost-effective and efficient solutions. O-Pile® and OZ systems, delivered on short timelines, ensure minimal disruption and long-term reliability for this critical coastal protection infrastructure.
